The Arts Department is the creative heartbeat of Small House Productions. Theatre. Film. Digital series. Every production we make, in every format, starts here.
We are here to support the artistic integrity of our community, to support the creatives who have joined our family, and to produce work that challenges and inspires us.
We believe storytelling is more than entertainment. It is truth-telling. It is a healing practice for the artist and the audience alike. Every production we create, no matter the stage or the screen, is rooted in that belief.
SUSAN C. SMALL
ARTS DEPARTMENT
DIRECTOR
Susan C. Small is a West Indian-born, Philadelphia-raised storyteller whose love for the arts has shaped every chapter of her life. Her creative journey began with poetry, and as she discovered writers like Toni Morrison and Alice Walker, that early love of language grew into something larger: a lifelong devotion to story itself.
Her connection to theater took root during her time at Society Hill Playhouse, where the magic of the stage arrested her and has kept her enchanted ever since. In the years that followed, Susan has worn nearly every hat the craft has to offer, playwright, director, producer, and costumer, building a body of work that moves fluidly across genre and generation.
Her period pieces Blue and Club 44 explore memory and legacy with quiet intimacy, while The Dark Side of the Moon ventures into thriller territory. Her children's productions, including Princess Nylah and the Journey to the Magic Window and Penny and the Wishing Well, invite young audiences into worlds of imagination and wonder.
Today, as founder of Small House Productions, Susan is looking forward to growing this work, and this community, even further, continuing to build spaces where stories, and the people who tell them, are seen.
